EXPOSICIÓN

Vertiente tonal

Artista(s): Gonzalo Cueto

In Tonal Stream, Gonzalo Cueto (Temuco, 1973) presents the confluence of a fieldwork that features expanded video, a soundscape and recorded interviews, developed during the last two years in Wallmapu. The work´s starting point is the Cautín River basin, a natural watercourse that rises from the southern slopes of the Lonquimay volcano, and which is by definition the scenario of the Mapuche community life.

In Tonal Stream, the river is an articulating flow of meanings, from which the various physical, historical and temporal layers that stress that Cueto calls «the deadly paradox of the current neoliberal development model»; are distinguished; in other words, the abuse of natural resources that only brings about fatal consequences for life. The artist proposes a videomapping installation on a series of synthesized volumes based on satellite photographs, a structure that operates like a geometric abstraction of the Andes, where fragments of visual pieces can be seen as a video-essay, collecting narratives and experiences at the riverside. Thus, the voices of its inhabitants, communities and the
embodiment of the struggle for the territory arise. This exhibition features an interview with Lonko Alberto Curamil, an advocate for the environment and the rights of the Mapuche People-Nation over their ancestral land, who won the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2019, known as the Green Nobel due to its international prestige.

The work proposes a journey through the flow of the Cautín River from its headwater to the sea, that is at the same time an audiovisual, poetic and political outline of the conflicts, disputes and resistances that converge in the water, an urgent and necessary expression against the depredation carried out by companies protected by the State.
